LES International

The International Conference in Melbourne was an excellent meeting point of LES members from the northern and the southern hemisphere. The Conference, by Margaret and her staff excellently organized, offered a variety of topics interesting for the more than 300 participants. The Program Committee, consisting of Richard Hamer, Bennie Brown and Alan Moyle, provided the participants with a wide range of workshops which were all very well attended. They showed without exceptions extensive discussions between speakers and participants and during the breaks the continuation of discussion and networking was greatly facilitated by the ''subject of interest''- signs at the coffee tables.
During lunches, reception and dinners also high priority was given to networking. An excellent meeting point was also the Publications Display, professionally staffed by Renate Siebrasse and Ernie Adams, at which participants could order their LES publications. The conference was preceded by the LES International Delegates and Committee Meetings, very efficiently lead by Platon Mandros (president LESI) and attended by more than 100 participants originating from 22 LES Societies. Also the 27 LESI Committees met with a very high amount of participants per meeting. For the ''lucky ones'' the conference could be extended with excellent touring possibilities which Down Under offers: sunny beaches for surfers and of course the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling and diving.
LES Australia and New Zealand has to be congratulated with the great success of their conference and the fabulous hosting of all LESI functions. Thanks go to those mentioned but also to Rodney De Boos, past president of LES International and Anne Trimmer, past president of LES ANZ.

les Nouvelles

The quarterly magazine of LES, les Nouvelles, is one of the crown jewels of the Society. Without any exception the magazine receives very high rates in all inquiries held among members when asked for the most appreciated service. les Nouvelles is designed to further the Society's objectives of assisting members in improving their skills and techniques in licensing and protecting Intellectual Property. The journal consists of two general sections. One contains papers on substantive topics related to the Society's educational objectives, and the other relates to activities of member Societies and licensing news and developments.
In the March 1999 issue articles are published with subjects like:
  • Clinical trails in pharmaceuticals;
  • How to get patents others want;
  • Italian creates ultimate ADR process;
  • New realities, challenges in biotech;
  • Managing a portfolio with software.

In the Blue Pages of les Nouvelles reports are published on the activities of several LES Societies and LES International Committees, but also reports on developments in guidelines from the European Commission and the full program for the LES European Conference in Venice, 22-26 September 1999.
It is always possible to submit papers for publication in les Nouvelles. Papers submitted for publication in les Nouvelles are acknowledged by a letter from the editor shortly after receipt. The author is asked to sign a "License to Publish" that is provided. The paper, meanwhile, is reviewed by members of the LESI Editorial Review Board, and the author is advised of the results of that review. It is vital that a paper relate directly to licensing. The lack of licensing content is the most common reason for rejection of papers. Publishable topics related to technology transfer can be wide-ranging. Especially of interest are case studies on actual licensing transactions. Since les Nouvelles is not a legal journal, topics relating strictly to legal protection of Intellectual Property are seldom published. The primary focus is on the business, legal and economic aspects of the transfer and commercialization of Intellectual Property.
There are few mechanical requirements. It is always best to keep a paper as brief as possible. A good maximum length is 20 double-spaced pages. Substantive papers as well as Society-related articles may be submitted via mail, courier, facsimile or e-mail. A diskette is not necessary.

Submit your paper to:

Cleveland, OH 44113, U.S.A.
