I hope, that you are ready for new activities of LES Benelux. Topic MeetingsFor those of you who were unable to attend the topic meeting of June 23, 1999 in Rotterdam concerning "Recent Trends in Biotech en IP Rights", please note that a copy of the Program and speakers' information as well as the transparencies used during the Conference is available. You will find a report on this meeting on page four of this Newsletter. The Board and the organizing committee were pleased to receive so many enthusiastic reactions. Nearly one hundred participants is indeed one of the largest LES Benelux Topic Meetings ever! The next meeting is planned on October 15, 1999 in Brussels. This meeting will be organized by the Belgium Group of AIPPI, but members of LES and BMM will enjoy a reduced member fee. One of the topics is "Character Licensing in the Benelux". The other topics deal with the protection of software under patent law and the relationship between trademarks and appellations of origin. Detailed information will be sent to you in due course. The last Topic Meeting in 1999 will be held together with our Annual General Meeting on November 24 in Rotterdam. The topic of this meeting will be "Tax aspects of International Licensing". The LES International Conference 2000The full program of the Conference and all other relevant details will be published in the September issue of les Nouvelles. Early registration for the conference is possible - the reduced early registration fee is applicable if registration and payment is received before February 1, 2000. For non-members originating from one of the Benelux-countries, the non-member fee also includes an offer for a free membership of LES Benelux for the year 2000. I hope that many will use this rare opportunity to attend an international LES Conference within the Benelux countries! It is also still possible to sponsor the Amsterdam 2000 Conference. If you or your company would be interested in participating as a sponsor, please contact me at +31 10 408 17 67 or e-mail Vanoosterom@oos.eur.nlThe LES European Conference in Venice, September 22-25, 1999On the international level, another opportunity for networking and gathering up-to-date information on IP and licensing subjects will be the European Conference organized by LES Italy. I trust to see a good attendance there, for what promises to be a very pleasant and well organized event. To run this Society in a good way, a lot of effort is needed. Today most of the work is done by board members, who are working voluntarily for LES. The greatest burden is the Membership Secretariat, which has been run by Wil van der Voorde and her company Polyresearch Service for almost 10 years. The administration takes about 4-8 hours per week. This work is caused by the steady growth of the number of members and all kinds of mutations: such as resigning members, members that move to another office, requests concerning admini-strative or financial procedures and so on. Furthermore LES Benelux organizes 4-5 meetings per year. One of these meetings is a full-day conference and one is combined with the Annual General Meeting. These meetings have to be well-organized. Besides this, there is a need for one-site management, which cannot be provided by board members. In view of the above, the board will present a proposal to members during the next AGM, concerning the appointment of a professional Administrative Consultant for the running of the day-to-day membership administration and for the administrative organization of topic meetings.Any person or company interested in this task is invited to send a proposal and cost estimate to the undersigned. A full description of the work and further information will of course be available at Emma van Oosterom, President of LES Benelux. P.O.
